An engine malfunction on a Melbourne-bound Qantas flight gave its 350 passengers quite a fright, shortly after it left Singapore late on Thursday night.

Some passengers described seeing flames coming from the engine, but Qantas rejected suggestions of a fire, saying the problem was a mechanical surge.
Passengers say staff acted quickly to reassure everyone on board, but it was still a terrifying experience.
“Suddenly we looked out over the wing and you could see sparks and flames just flying out,” said a passenger.
But they say staff quickly reassured everybody on board.
“The stewards came hurtling down the corridor and went to the phones,” said a passenger.
“All the phones started pinging. They explained straight away exactly what happened, that one of the engines had failed.
“As this was all happening you could see the plane turning around and we were dropping. We started to drop straight away.”
