THE famed Qantas flying kangaroo may be headed for extinction – or at the least – an expensive makeover.

Qantas confirmed rumours it is looking at remodelling one of Australia’s most recognisable logos.

“We are always looking to ensure our product and image remain contemporary and relevant,” a Qantas spokesman said when asked about the change of logo.

“I can’t say anything more at this stage.”

The airline would not confirm whether the Flying Kangaroo would keep its place in the revamped branding.

The original kangaroo symbol first appeared on Qantas aircraft in 1944, derived from the Australian one penny coin.

Wings were added to the marsupial three years later, before the current logo was conceived in 1984.

Speculation that the logo would be revamped was rife on industry websites and chatrooms yesterday, with most claiming Qantas would be reluctant to scrap the kangaroo altogether.

Brand expert Richard Sauerman of Brandising said Qantas would be crazy to play with the winning formula.

“I wouldn’t change the brand, the one you see when you walk down the street,” he said.

“Their logo and brand essence – the Spirit of Australia – it doesn’t get much better than that.”

The Qantas board met yesterday for the first time since the $11.1 billion take over of the airline flopped.

Chief executive Geoff Dixon presented major reconstruction plans to the board, including a move to carve off its fleet of 200 planes into a separate company.
